Darko Bajic
(Director)


Darko Bajić, film and television director, tenured professor of film directing at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts of
Belgrade University. He was the associate dean of the Faculty and head of the film and television directing
department. He is the owner of the production house Magic Line.

Born in Belgrade in the year 1955. In 1982 with the film Live Broadcast (Direktan prenos) he was the first student
to graduate from the Faculty of Dramatic arts with a feature-length presentation. This film is awarded the distinguished
award for the best debutant, “Studio,” as well as the award for best production from the Pula Film Festival in 1982.
“Pula's Golden Door” (Zlatna vrata Pule) and ten other awards from various Yugoslavian film festivals were also
awarded. At the Mannheim-Heidelberg International Film Festival Live Broadcast won three official awards. Bajić is
the creator of the Belgrade film school of the 1980s.

In 1984 Darko Bajić makes the TV show Gray Home (Sivi dom) that is awarded at the Monte Carlo and Cizano
Terma film festivals. This cult series of 12 episodes is still considered one of Serbian best television shows.

In 1986 he starts work as the assistant professor of film and television directing and is soon tenured at the Faculty
of Dramatic Arts. He has mentored many young, now established, Serbian directors.

In 1988, his movie The Forgotten ones (Zaboravljeni) was shown on many film festivals around the world and wins
the Grand Prize for Best Director and Best Leading Actor. In Yugoslavia, apart from the awards it received, it was
one of the most viewed movies of the year.

In 1989 Bajić records the movie First Blow (Početni udarac). The film is awarded in Niš, Pula and in Valence Bajić
is awarded from the National Association of Film Directors.

In 1990, Darko Bajić makes the 12 episode TV series The Forgotten ones (Zaboravljeni) and thus completes the
collection of works dealing with juvenile deliquency. The series was very popular and achieved great rankings.

In 1992, he makes his fourth movie Black Bomber (Crni bombarder). He is also the co-producer of the film. It
won the most prizes and accomodated most viewers in Yugoslavia that year. The movie was shown in many
festivals at such locations as Los Angeles, Montreal, Moscow, Stockholm, Rimini, Ghentu, Harare, Belorussia,
etc. At the Herceg Novi Film Festival it was awarded the Golden Mimosa (Zlatna mimoza) for directing, scenography,
costume and photography. The same year he is awarded the Grand Prize of the Scenario Festival in Vrnjačka Banja
and two most prevalent acting awards at the Niš Festival.

His fifth film, Balkan Rules (Balkanska pravila), is completed in 1997 and he is both director and producer. This very
important creation is somewhat different than his movies thus far, but carries all the traits which made Bajić a first-
class cinematographer. It won the first award on the Subotica Internatinal Film Festival: Best Yugoslavian Motion
Picture. The film also receives the Golden Mimosa for Best Director at the Herceg Novi Film Festival. On the Salerno
Film Festival, Bajić is awarded the Grand Prize for directing. The movie also participated in many international film
festivals: Montreal, Salerno, Montevideo, Barcelona, etc.

In 2000, Bajić creates War Live (Rat uživo) as the director and producer. This movie was nominated for the 2001
Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film cathegory. It was shown at a large number of film festivals around the
world. Official competition at Karlove Vari, film festivals in Los Angeles, Sao Paolo, Keln, Sofia, Moscow Herceg
Novi, Palić, Niš and many others. It won many awards, from which we note the Golden Mimosa for Best Director
and Leading Actor (Herceg Novi), The SCAN Award (Novi Sad), the People's Award from the Athens International
Film Festival and the Award for Best Director on the Philadelphia Film Festival.

Darko Bajić also works as a theater director. In Zvezdara Theater he directed three shows: The litle one (Mala)
1992, The Life of Jovan (Život Jovanov) 1994, The Love Boat (Brod ljubavi) 2006. The cult show The litle one was
performed over 150 times.
